About School

MSgr. Francis French requested Mother Maragret Mary, the superior of St.Francis Convent to open an orphanage and a school. The Provincial Superior, Mother Gonzaga gave her permission and provoded necessary members and thus St. Philomena’s convent and school came into existence in 1945, in Garhia Phatak. The main building became the residence of sisiters and contained the Kitchen, refectory one class room and a small dispensary. The smaller building was found suitable for the chapel and two living rooms. St.Francis convent looked after its filiation well, provided them with every necessary thing.

In 1949, the superior brought the property from Msgr. French and thus St. Philomena’s convent and school became the property of CJ sisters. In 1950 a foble storey building was built as the number of students increased every year. The happy atmosphere of the orphanage and the smooth running of the school helped the children and the orphans in the boarding feel at home.

In 1949 the primary school had been recognised and the junior High school in 1951. In 1961 the name of the school was changed to Nirmala Convent. The recognition for High school was granted in 1987 and it was indeed Good News for the sisters, teachers , parents and children. As the school made progress in every field, the need to start the science stream at High School was felt which was fulfilled in 1993.

Aftewr much waiting and hard work a new building was constructed in 2009 and the same year college section with science and arts was recognised. It was a great relief for those parents who wanted their daughter to be educated in a good surrounding with good values and principles which have come down from its foundress Mother Mary Ward. Many sisters with their sacrificing spirit brought up the school to what it is today. With much gratitude we remember them and we pay our tribute to those who have gone from this world to the other. The following are the managers and principals of the past.

The School has now a spacious hall, a large playground, well equipped science labs and well furnished computer lab. Besides this main apostolate of imaprting education in a class room setting we have started the NIOS – National Institude of Open Schooling for the girls. Through this we are helping the dropouts to complete their education. And for this our teachers are ever ready to reach out to our students. The First Batch of NIOS was a group of 79 girls and mothers who grabbed the opportunity.

A comminity of CJ( Congregation of Jesus) sisters resides in the campus and they animate and guide the teachers and children to reach their goal. Sr. Poonam CJ, the present Principal works hard to bring the school to its heights.
